How it is done

How papers are served in Ohio

Certified or express mail by the clerk

Unless the rules permit otherwise, the clerk serves by U.S. certified or express mail, return receipt requested, signed by any person accepting delivery; the clerk may also use a commercial carrier requiring a signed receipt. Ohio Civ. R. 4.1(A)(1) ↗

Personal service

On the plaintiff's written request, the server locates the person and tenders a copy of the process and accompanying documents. Ohio Civ. R. 4.1(B) ↗

Residence service

On the plaintiff's written request, the server leaves a copy of the process and complaint at the person's usual place of residence with someone of suitable age and discretion who lives there. Ohio Civ. R. 4.1(C) ↗

Who

Service starts with the clerk. Mail service is sent by the clerk. For personal or residence service, the clerk delivers the process to the sheriff of the county where the person lives or is found (the bailiff for municipal court), or to a person designated by court order to serve civil process. Ohio Civ. R. 4.1(A)–(C) ↗

A private civil process server serves under a court order designating them to serve civil process. Ohio Civ. R. 4.1(B)(1) ↗

Proof

The proof of service in Ohio

Return on the process. After serving, the server endorses that fact on the process and returns it to the clerk. If the server cannot serve within 28 days, they endorse that fact and the reasons and return it. Ohio Civ. R. 4.1(B)(2) ↗

Your server's proof is built from the field record of the serve.
