How it is done
The person served must receive the documents personally, in hand from the server. Maryland Judiciary, Court Help: Service ↗
The person delivering in person may leave the papers with an adult who lives in the other party's home. Maryland Judiciary, Court Help: Service ↗
The server may mail the documents by certified restricted mail; the return receipt must carry the other party's signature. Maryland Judiciary, Court Help: Service ↗
Who
You cannot deliver the court documents yourself. Someone over 18 who is not a party can serve them, whether someone you hire, a friend or relative not involved in the case, or the sheriff (for a fee). Maryland Judiciary, Court Help: Service ↗
Timelines
Our first-attempt promises:
Every attempt shows in your account as soon as the server logs it.
The court's deadline for service: The summons has an expiration date. If it expires before service, it is returned to the court and the clerk issues a new summons on request. Maryland Judiciary, Service of Process in the Circuit Court ↗
Proof
Affidavit of service. The person who served the documents files a sworn affidavit of service stating the method used, with the signed return receipt attached for mail service. Family law cases use CC-DR-055 (hand delivery) or CC-DR-056 (mail); District Court uses DC-CV-002. Maryland Judiciary, Court Help: Service ↗
Your server's proof is built from the field record of the serve.
